people like me
artist statement
As a Chinese adoptee, I've often wondered about the stories of others like me. Growing up, I assumed everyone had a loving mother and father, but that's not always the case. The One-Child Policy, introduced in the 1970s, led to a surge in international adoptions, with many girls being adopted out. I'm one of them.
For a long time, my sister and the girls I was adopted with were the only ones I knew who shared my experience. But I've come to realize that there are many more people with stories like mine. 'People Like Me' is a project that aims to connect Chinese adoptees through shared experiences and stories.
In Chinese legend, the Red Thread of Destiny binds two people together for eternity. I believe that our shared experiences can create a similar bond. Through this project, I hope to create a platform for Chinese adoptees to share their personal stories, fostering a sense of community and connection.
By collecting and sharing these stories, I hope to create a richer understanding of what it means to be a Chinese adoptee and to provide a sense of belonging for those who, like me, have wanted to find others whom have experienced growing up in an adopted family.
